Ep. 74 - The Homesman (Stagecoach vs. The Hired Hand)

The new Tommy Lee Jones' joint, THE HOMESMAN, inspires a look at women in westerns. Starting all the way back with the the hooker with the heart of gold saved by John Wayne in 1939's STAGECOACH to 1971's THE HIRED HAND where a responsible single mother is abandoned by Peter Fonda.

Notice that we ignored Shane's campaigning for Madeline Stowe's six shooting ways in BAD GIRLS.

Ep. 73 - Pioneer (The Conversation vs. The Parallax View)

Erik Skjoldbjærg, director of INSOMNIA, joins us to discuss his new film, PIONEER, which was inspired by his love of 1970s American conspiracy thrillers, and we make sure to follow in his footsteps with our episode debating two films from 1974: THE CONVERSATION vs. THE PARALLAX VIEW.

Ep. 72 - Whiplash (Black Swan vs. Ruby Sparks)

We are the wrong people to talk about perfectionism in artists (assuming you've listened to the prior 71 episodes) so we bring in Tressa Bowling and Justin Stewart of the Beaucoup Pop podcast, Sequential Spirits, to debate BLACK SWAN vs. RUBY SPARKS.

Before that? It's us giving WHIPLASH the big sloppy kiss it deserves, just as J.K. Simmons taught us.

Ep. 71 - The Theory of Everything (Sid and Nancy vs. A Beautiful Mind)

We didn't understand Stephen Hawking in A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME, and we don't understand love in real life. But we do understand romance in biopics, which is what the new film about Hawking attempts to do in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING. This inspires a look back at other great romances of our time (or at least the altered film versions) in SID AND NANCY & A BEAUTIFUL MIND.

Ep. 70 - Filmage: The Story of Descendents/All (Color Me Obsessed vs. Anvil: The Story of Anvil)

Writer/director of FILMAGE: THE STORY OF DESCENDENTS/ALL, Matt Riggle, joins us to educate us (ok, just Mike) on this great band and we hope to do the same for The Replacements in COLOR ME OBSESSED and Anvil in ANVIL: THE STORY OF ANVIL.

Ep. 69 - Horrible Bosses 2 (Glengarry Glen Ross vs. Swimming With Sharks)

We are inspired by HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 to be just as original as we look at two older films where Kevin Spacey is... a horrible boss. Those two films are 1992's GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS v. 1994's SWIMMING WITH SHARKS. But before we clock in for the daily grind of Spacey insults, we talk about Chris Pine's future as a comedic actor, decide to hire Alan Arkin or Al Pacino, and debate the use of Hungry Eyes in torture scenes.

GUEST: Tangible Teddy wants our listeners to chime in on a social media handle change for himself and sizes himself up against Benecio Del Toro.

Ep. 68 - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (The Running Man vs. Battle Royale)

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 1 may be done with the games, but we are not. So we look back at 1987's THE RUNNING MAN and 2000's BATTLE ROYALE to satisfy our bloodlust, discuss appropriate workout wear, Arnold's vanilla screen names, the tragedy of the husky boy with the crossbow, and ultimately romance while killing your fellow man for sport.
