Ep. 339 - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (In a Lonely Place vs. Hollywoodland)

On this episode we present next door neighbors to Quentin Tarantino's latest divisive film (that opened to glowing reviews and box-office success... but real divisive!) ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD with an officially sanctioned classic IN A LONELY PLACE and one Oscar contender miss in HOLLYWOODLAND. Programming this seemingly unfair fight is my co-host from 99 FROM 99, Ben Zuk, who states on this episode that all the value he attained from film school resides in this very episode. On that depressing note please subscribe to our podcast where we relive happier times and the films of 1999!

Ep. 338 - Captain Marvel (Total Recall vs. Galaxy Quest)

We invite CAPTAIN MARVEL superfan, but not a fanboy for that's an important distinction, Dave Giannini of A PODCAST DIRECTED BY to tell us just how wrong he is about this Brie Larson "buddy comedy." Along the way we go back to simpler times when Arnold Schwarzenegger could play an everyman in TOTAL RECALL and when Tim Allen "played" an asshole in GALAXY QUEST. For a theme on altered perceptions in science fiction... neither of us change our mind and probably only change your mind on continuing to listen to this podcast. That being said click on the links below:

Ep. 337 - Dark Phoenix (The Little Mermaid vs. Pretty Woman)

The thoughtful and generally kind response to the last in the Fox version of the X-Men saga DARK PHOENIX requires an equally thoughtful and kind dissection of redheads generally being crazy and scary as seen in such films as THE LITTLE MERMAID and PRETTY WOMAN. Are the themes of these transforming gingers enough to make a man develop a distaste for Jessica Chastain? Or was that just her involvement with the bald-cap wielding James McAvoy YET AGAIN? Either way your host gets to disagree with one of his favorite people to disagree with: Web Bist of the single episode COMMENTARY TREK. Which you should check out by clicking that link and then click these:

Ep. 336 - Shazam! (Big vs. Once Upon a Deadpool)

Challenged by longtime friend of the show Peter of Original Remake and Podstalgic to reassess the creep factor of BIG we pair it up with the less-foul mouthed version of Ryan Reynolds in ONCE UPON A TIME IN DEADPOOL as we (like the DCU) try to figure out who our target audience is for this podcast. Answer? No one. But click on these links anyway:

Ep. 335 - Spider-Man: Homecoming (Grosse Pointe Blank vs. American Teen)

Because I am not a nice person I drag returning guest Natasha of The Rad Ass Bitches not only back to this loathsome movie podcast but also back to high school. Thankfully the selected films include a favorite for both of us in GROSSE POINTE BLANK where John Cusack returns for his tenth year high school reunion after a professional life of assassination and general being a malcontent. But a romantic one! And then it's on to the documentary AMERICAN TEEN which is HEREDITARY levels of uncomfortable at times. Thankfully we kick the show off by dancing on the grave of Spider-Man in the MCU with SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING.

Ep. 334 - Under the Silver Lake (The Black Dahlia vs. The Nice Guys)

It wouldn't be a movie podcast without a couple of dudes trying to put the pieces together on things they don't fully understand and that is very fitting for the recent film UNDER THE SILVER LAKE. Thankfully we have a new guest Melvin Benson of the podcast CINEMATIC DOCTRINE to lead our unfortunate host in a discussion on the missing women of Hollywood and the foolish men who follow. And there is a lot of foolishness in our selected double feature of THE BLACK DAHLIA and THE NICE GUYS. Also if you click any of the links below... fools!

Ep. 333 - The Post (The Front Page vs. The Paper)

Having been looked upon for years as the movie podcast of record for this art form known as cinema we've taken it upon ourselves to celebrate 1001 films covered on this show (don't ask why two extra were covered on a premise based around a triple feature but I remember one of the extras was MONEY MONSTER, obviously you fools) by looking at the paper of record on film. In the recent (we said we were the record, not punctual) Steven Spielberg picture THE POST we find Meryl Streep challenged to maintain her family's legacy under pressure from everyone else and Tom Hanks. Spoiler alert: Hanks has more sway than EVERYONE ELSE. This inspires a conversation on the changing power of the daily newspaper as seen as far back in 1931's THE FRONT PAGE and unfortunately the every bit as dated 1994 movie THE PAPER.

Don't @ me about how dated this episode is but if you must please subscribe to my podcast with our guest BEN ZUK over at 99 FROM 99... and THEN click the links below:

Ep. 332 - Juliet, Naked (Training Day vs. The Phenom)

On this episode with Jairo from the great MARK AS PLAYED podcast (and to a lesser degree THE TRUE BROMANCE FILM PODCAST) discusses one of his great passions in life: Ethan Hawke. Unfortunately much like our theme revealing around JULIET, NAKED of the more you know the the more your passion wanes, our esteemed guest finds himself in the same spot with our double feature of TRAINING DAY and THE PHENOM.

Along the way we both do a terrible job of promoting our other podcast MARK AS PLAYED so here's a reminder on that particular misfire. Also these links:

Ep. 331 - Beatriz at Dinner (Rope vs. The Last Summer)

We invite our listeners to one last dinner with us, machine and horse, as we do the polite thing and talk politics over the dinner table. BEATRIZ AT DINNER features two great performances from Salma Hayek and John Lithgow doing battle across the political divide and we in turn present Alfred Hitchcock's ROPE and Stacy Title's THE LAST SUPPER as dinner party rivals where philosophical differences lead to murder.

And then we announce our intent to murder this podcast (as if we haven't done that before!)

Ep. 330 - Thoroughbreds (Heavenly Creatures vs. Saved!)

On this episode where we get lost to search engine shenanigans (and maybe pick up a few new disappointed listeners) we look at girls gone wild... on film. Good films. Films like Peter Jackson's HEAVENLY CREATURES. Films where Mandy Moore would slap you upside the head with a bible for thinking such dirty thoughts. She'd recommend watching SAVED! instead. So we did. All because of the release of BOOKSMART and our love for a film that maybe didn't get as much love as we'd hoped in THOROUGHBREDS. Listen and click these links before you go back to trying to find other girls going wild:

Ep. 329 - I Feel Pretty (The Tao of Steve vs. Shallow Hal)

Amy Schumer recently had a stand-up special that I'm sure will force Netflix to change their rating system yet again, but before they do that we put in our two cents on her last feature film I FEEL PRETTY. Web Bist joins the show again and re-examines his past physical assessment of others while suffering through another double feature from your host Mike that will undoubtedly end his assessment of guesting on this podcast. THE TAO OF STEVE goes up against SHALLOW HAL as its a battle between two questionable cads that make both guest and host feel better about themselves.

And that's really the point of this podcast.

Ep. 328 - The Hero (The Contender vs. I'll See You in My Dreams)

For your consideration... give Sam Elliott a damn Oscar already. Since we don't yet have that power (once again, YET) we do the next best thing: podcast about three Sam Elliott movies with Jamison Rabbitt. All three films feature characters reflecting on their respective lives, but only one gets it completely right by having Mr. Elliott play the title character of THE HERO. As for our double feature, we'll just have to settle for a great rant from The Hero in THE CONTENDER and the acknowledgment that The Hero is hot in I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS. Ep. 327 - Widows (Spring Breakers vs. Ocean's 8)

We held back on our episode for WIDOWS for its inevitable Oscar nominations. No dice. So how about the same week there's yet another movie about revenge starring Liam Neeson. Well, goddamnit that publicity won't help this little movie podcast. So you know what? Enjoy an early spring break as our episode theme on women pulling off heist movies features SPRING BREAKERS going up against the classier (but perhaps not as neon flashy) OCEAN'S 8. And god help us if we held back this episode any longer. Thankfully our guest Web Bist's impression of Andy Rooney never goes out of style. Or always is. Anyway click these links!

Ep. 326 - A Star Is Born (Death to Smoochy vs. Chicago)

99 FROM 99 host Ben Zuk is back to educate us on NOT ONLY all the versions of A STAR IS BORN but also DEATH TO SMOOCHY. Naturally. The other half of our rivalries in the performing arts double feature is Best Picture winner CHICAGO. And while your host may prefer the Razzie contender starring Robin Williams and Edward Norton, both voices on this podcast seem agreeable to Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's Oscar contender. Because God knows that Bradley needs a win in this life.

Ep. 325 - Escape Room (Sleuth vs. 12 Angry Men)

It's early January so that must be a cheesy horror movie we can watch instead of homework films like ROMA. Thankfully ESCAPE ROOM arrived right on time and also gave us the opportunity to let Laurence Oliver and Michael Caine in SLEUTH try to outwit other guys stuck in a room with Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott in the remake of 12 ANGRY MEN. All of this could lead somewhere gentlemanly but instead somehow we get on the subject of Mike Judge's EXTRACT and Zach Braff in THE LAST KISS displaying the finer points of cuckolding. Don't @ us Trump fans. But if you must click on the links below:

Ep. 324 - Bad Times at the El Royale (Four Rooms vs. Seven Psychopaths)

On an episode programmed by a SOBER CINEMA superfine (but definitely not this podcast) Andy From Work joined the show for a New Year's edition inspired by BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE. We go back to the much maligned FOUR ROOMS (though Andy From Work says it's "close a perfect film") where Tim Roth runs into all sorts of nonsense that he must deal with as a lowly bellhop. While in SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS The Great Sam Rockwell creates the nonsense as he tries to help his screenwriter film in his writers block. For movie podcaster's block we simple just went to ETHEREAL BREWING and produced this. Please don't blame the brewery for our stupid movie thoughts at the links below:
